Segment Launching Begins for Nagpur Metro’s Double-Decker Section

Workers from NCC Ltd. have started launching precast segments to construct the 6-lane vehicle level of a 3.41 km double-decker structure on Wardha Road as part of Nagpur Metro’s 19.658 km Line-1.

The design of this Rs. 425 crore multi-level structure, spanning from Ajni Chowk to Sonegaon Police Station, was finalized in September 2015 after which the NMRCL revealed a model to the public. To facilitate its construction, NCC and Matte Associates in November 2016 demolished a 15 year old flyover at Chatrapati Chowk in an operation lasting 8 days.

To make things clear:

• Level 0 – Local traffic on the ground level
• Level 1 – 6-lane road level for vehicles
• Level 2 – Metro viaduct

Similar structures exist in varying lengths in Jaipur, Kochi & Chennai, and are planned in Nagpur (Kamptee Road), Bengaluru (Jayadeva Hospital Intersection) and Pune (Nalstop Chowk).

Note – these segments form the road level’s central spine and will later be stitched with cantilever wings on either side similar to what was done for the Sahar Elevated Access Road (SEAR) in Mumbai.

Here’s a nice video showcasing this section’s status. Segments for the vehicle level can be seen at the 1:08 min mark –

Why are they so low to the ground?

The segments of Nagpur metro look more uniform. Unlike Chennai where I feel the finishing is awkward at places.
    What’s the diff in process?

The final appearance is a result of how the concrete is cured. Some contractors get lazy (poor QA/QC on operator’s side) while others do a good job. In Hyderabad, L&T has applied a white curing compound to make the entire structure look uniform.
