TBM D215 Lowered into Mumbai Metro’s Pali Ground Shaft

This afternoon, workers from Larsen & Toubro and Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company (L&T – STEC) JV began lowering parts of tunnel boring machine D215 ‘Wainganga-3’ into the Pali Ground TBM Launch Shaft for constructing a part of Mumbai Metro’s new 33.5 km Line-3’s tunnels.

This Ø6.68m dual-mode machine is part of a 3 TBM order (T-206 has commenced tunneling & D213 is yet to be lowered). It successfully passed factory acceptance testing (FAT) in November 2017 and arrived at the city’s port in February 2018. L&T-STEC JV plans to complete assembly towards the end of March. Once done, it’ll first be deployed to build the 1296m down-line tunnel towards CSIA Terminal 2 Station as part of the line’s 4.157 km package UGC-07, between Marol Naka – MIDC – SEEPZ  – Aarey Colony Ramp, which was awarded by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. in July 2016.

D215 will build a total of 3 tunnels, all on the down-line –

Launch Site Destination Length
Pali Ground Shaft CSIA T2 1296m
Pali Ground Shaft MIDC 694m
MIDC SEEPZ 980m

The circular Pali Ground Shaft is located just north of the Marol Naka Station –

All 5 contractors of the line plan to deploy a total of 17 TBMs to construct it, and with this development –

• 6 TBMs have been commissioned
• 2 TBMs have been lowered into their respective shafts (T-60 ‘Godavari-2’ and D215 ‘Wainganga-3’)
• 13 TBMs have passed factory acceptance tests (1 Terratec and 3 Robbins machines are pending)
• 11 TBMs have arrived in the city’s port from China & Singapore

See the February 2018 tunneling update for more in-depth details on each package.

    Hi TMRG

Can you provide an update for line 2A and Line 7. MMRDA is providing almost weekly construction update since Jan18

    My questions are as following
    1. With 65-75% pilling work completed and pier work gaining good momentum, can we expect the civil packages to be completed by end of year to early next year?
    2. Despite line 7 having achieved all milestones before 2A the progress on 2A seems to be way faster than line 7. Is there an issue which has come up which is delaying line 7. My understanding was that line 7 was easier and small hence would have been constructed faster.
    3. After the complications of civil packages how long would other packages take to get the line operational
    4. Lastly I had read that MMRDA is planning to use pi-girders for station work to make the concourse. Could you elaborate on the same ?

    Hi TMRG,

    Great job, maan!!

Do you think Mumbai line 7 will be extended upto Bandra E from its current proposed extension to domestic airport line 3 to form interchange?

From Vile Parle/Santacruz to Bandra, there will be a really fantastic network with 2B, 3, 7 extd and Suburban all running close and parallel. With the Juhu-Carter road richie rich guys preferring cars and not much population in Parle (E) to Bandra (E), do you think there enough commuters to keep line 7 Bandra extd viable? Beyond Bhayandar guys will keep suburban full, ones on west side of western railway will use line 2, east side, line 7 and line 3 (domestic airport interchange).

Would love to hear you expert opinion!

    Keep it up!

    Thanks in advance!

Hi, not an expert here but any further extension of Line-7 on the WEH will definitely have a ‘great’ ridership. The extension from Andheri East (Line-1’s WEH Station) to CSIA T1 Domestic should have ideally been included in the 1st stage itself. This extension and the extension further south to Bandra East really depends on the availability of funds, so can’t guess when or if the line will get extended.

If I had it my way, I’d love to see Line-7 being extended from Bandra East into town along Ambedkar Road or Senapati Bapat Marg to form a central line.

Hmmm, line 7 to town, great idea! You must send it to MMRDA in my opinion.

By the way, thanks for adding monorail in the maps. Can you please consider adding suburban rail in exisiting/ another “future network map”? (Even though its somewhat blurly visible in Google maps itself). After all, it’s Mumbai’s own regional rail !

          Thanks.
