Hebbal – Sarjapur Line Readded to Bangalore Metro Phase 3 Plans

Karnataka’s Chief Minister on Friday announced the re-addition of a 37 km metro line connecting Hebbal – Sarajpur to Bangalore Metro’s Phase 3 project at an estimated cost of Rs. 15,000 crore.

The city’s Phase 3 has been on drawing board since 2014 with multiple announcements made and feasibility studies conducted so far.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) will now set into motion the process to create its Detailed Project Report (DPR) which will provide a baseline of its length, underground & elevated route composition, number of stations, their locations, depot, operational game plan, total cost etc.

The line will cut through the city’s core and connect Carmeleram, Agara, Koramangala, Dairy Circle, Central College and Armane Nagar. It was dropped from Phase 3 plans during a similar budgetary announcement in 2020 in favor of the following two metrolite (light rail transit) lines planned through the public private partnership (PPP) model.

  • ORR West Line: Hebbal to Mysore Road Metro Station (30 km)
  • Magadi Road Toll Gate to Kadabagere (14 km)
Indicative route of Hebbal – Sarjapur line is shown in brown color – view Phase 3 information

The line was originally envisioned to connect Carmelaram – Yelahanka. Now it appears the line will continue south-east to Sarjapur town. On the northern-end, the Hebbal – Yelahanka section will be serviced by trains on the 56 km Blue Line, which is under construction through Phase 2A and Phase 2B.

This is an exciting re-addition to the project, but there’s a long…long way to go – at least 4 years I’d say – for any any sort of construction work to begin. I have more questions than answers at this time, and reckon we’ll next hear about this line in a year when BMRCL or its appointed DPR preparer is hopefully closer to finalizing its DPR.

In the next couple years, we might see the re-addition of the following lines which were once considered for inclusion in Phase 3:

  • Marathahalli – Hosakerehalli
  • Gottigere to Basavapura
  • RK Hegde Nagar to Aerospace Park
  • Kogilu Cross to Rajanukunte
  • Bommasandra to Attibele

    This is exciting!
Not sure if the line really needs to go all the way out to Sarjapur Village though.

I think it has to. There are lot of layouts and apartments between ring road junction and Sarjapur with a poor public transport, this line will rejuvenate the entire Sarjapur road

I feel it should connect further than Hebbal to Sahakarnagar, Vidhyaranyapur till Doddaballapur as we have major development happening in that part of the city also which would ease the traffic on the Hebbal fly over as well

I wish they connect it till sarjapura , we are still waiting for good connectivity roats airport bus service and many other public facilities like water and gass connection since a long time. After the lockdown people in sarjapura saw a sharp increase in population

Why? What is your problem if it connects to Sarjapura? People living in Sarjapura are not people? They don’t pay taxes? They don’t belong to bangalore?

It’s necessary actually, being an real estate agent I’d say that city is also growing outside the city too… N there are so many builders projects already going on in Sarapur road and even new Wipro office for approximately 100,000 ppl will be staying.

Sarjapura is the one of the main place for working people who connect to Bellandur/White field/Koramangala with same distance.
It’s good to extend metro line atleast till Sarjapura Circle for economic growth of Bangalore.
Bangalore smart economic expansion and touch of Bangalore smartness expansion to surrounding connected places like Sarjapura Circle really required when compared with other cities in India.

What if the Sarjapur line is directly connected to Airport line from Hebbal and the line on ORR is made a circular route? Wouldn’t that be better?

    • Srinivas Ponnuri says:

The way I see it will be connected to airport line it might intersect with orr line in some point since it’s going towards Sarjapur. It should be extended further towards towards yelahanka eventually proceeding beyond yelahanka merging with metro line which is in progress towards biec Tumkur road

@TMRG – Can you please share your thoughts on the integration of the lines? From Agara till belandur there would be an overlay in all probability.
Does it mean 2 lines will run parallel to each other? Blue line is already under construction so it’s design can’t be modified anymore.
If yes, then isn’t it an example of lack of foresight from BMRCL?
I live in sydney and the public transport systems built almost 100 years ago still have decent if not great integration with other modes of transport. It seems BMRCL doesn’t have any foresight when it comes to design of the metro. Systems like these last 100s of years. Lack of planning now would result in inconvenience/massive overheads of years and years to come.

Different lines can share a certain track length. I think it’s almost impossible to create 100% mutual exclusion given the current Bangalore spread.

You’re right – both will run parallel if this line gets built. Typical example of piecemeal planning found across the country.

Why would Indian officials plan for 100 years. The sooner a project get redundant, the more profitable for them(more commissions). Eg. RV road metro station was demolished to while planning for RV road -Ecity line. In any case, BMRCL is the most pathtetic public transport service in India. Be it planning, financing, execution, operation or maintainance

UP has planned Metro systems in five cities, Maharashtra & Gujarat in three cities each, MP in two cities, whereas Karnataka (Bengaluru), TN (Chennai), Telengana(Hyd), AP(Vizag) and Kerala(Kochi) have/planned Metros in only one city each. Why this disparity? Are the govt’s. inthe Southern states not pushing hard enough to get their projects sanctioned?

Obviously they will run under loss, because they build metro stations very close to each other.. Bmrcl should plan metro stations atleast more than 2km apart so that the cost of maintenance and running the stations comes down…
Even if I have to commute by an auto we have to pay a minimum fare for 2km…
Some stations are very close to each other within 800mtrs( especially jayanagar stretch)…
Please stop wasting public money in building more number of stations, after that metro will be under loss…

There is a different logic. The probability of people being able to walk increases by 50% making metro more acceptable.

        • Vijay says:

They can be approx slightly more than 1 km, but not 800 m or so. But, on the contrary, proposed blue line has many stations even more than 3 km apart, especially after Jakkur. Even in thickly populated areas, there are no stations planned. Why cant they have odd-even rules for metro, with three set of stations as odd-numbered-train stoppages, even-numbered-train stoppages and all-train-stoppages, this process repeating. People seldom travel by metro for a mere 2-3 km distance.

Government projects cannot be planned entirely based on Profit-Loss calculations. The end objective is to provide public services to general public & boost public transport & resolve traffic congestion in Bengaluru City. By not creating sufficient metro stations in large numbers, such objectives will not be realised.

Metros simply cannot be built in every city. MH & GJ have bigger industrially developed & populated cities apart from capitals like Pune, Surat & Nagpur which are big economic centers. In KA apart from Bangalore other cities don’t have the size & population for metro rail. Metros need huge investments. So not economically feasible for smaller cities.

Why do Infrastructure projects in Karnataka take ages to materialize, Whereas in the other neighbouring Southern states they are so quick
to implement? For instance, the new Kochi airport was built and ready even as Karnataka was still deciding whether to locate KIAL at Devanahalli or Mysuru road.

Since a Metro rail network costs three times more than a Suburban rail network, wouldn’t it be prudent to plan overground SRN in the peripheral areas of cities, where land acquisition is easier and restrict Metro rail network MRN to the core areas of the city, mainly running underground, where land acquisition would be restricted only for constructing Metro stations?

On 18 Feb 2019, I met the then Deputy CM of Karnataka, Shri Parameshwara and requested him to look into a new route from Cantonment Metro Station to Hebbal – via TV Tower, Mehkri Circle, Ganganagar to Hebbal. This was to ensure retention of integration at Cantonment, to reduce cost and duration of construction, etc. He told me this is very interesting and asked me for drawings and made some notings on the letter. This was carried by Media too. Although nothing was heard of it, I am indeed happy that a part of our suggested route falls along the new route being talked about now (Sarjapur – Hebbal).

Bommasandra Attibel line is so busy that too people playing from BANGALORE to HOSUR and HOSUR to BANGALORE is so dense if asked KSRTC will tell how dense people travel from HOSUR to BANGALORE every day as hundreds of KSRTC and TNSTC bus ply vise versa, that’s why extension till ATTIBELE from Bommasandra is significant.

Wouldn’t the line coming from the central part of the city usually have more riders heading to the airport than a peripheral line? So wouldn’t it make more sense for the Brown Line to go to the airport, and then continue building the Blue Line to the west aiming to eventually close the circle? Why are they doing it in this unorthodox manner?

    Reply
    • Nihar says:

Well actually, most Indian cities except Mumbai have no concept of a dense downtown area. They’ve just sprawled outwards in all directions.

In the case of Bangalore, east BLR has turned out to be more of a business district for IT compared to the city centre. This has led to far more people travelling to the airport from the east than anywhere else, as evidenced in BMTC’s airport route ridership and connectivity to the east.

So basically, extending the ORR line to the airport actually does make sense.

How about a mini-metro line linking the present Green and Purple lines, from Rajajinagar to Hosahalli via Chord Road. In between, two stoppages at Manjunath Nagar and Rajajinagar Industrial Area.
Though people would require two interchanges rather than one, it would shorten the distance considerably between Yeshwantpur/Peenya and Kengeri.
