November 17, 2022 Update: CMRL has issued a LOA to KEC-VNC JV for Line-5’s track work with a contract value of Rs. 199.99 crore.

August 22, 2022 Original Post: Larsen & Toubro and KEC International – Vijay Nirman Company JV on Saturday were declared as the lowest bidders for 2 ballastless track work contracts of the 118.9 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project.

Larsen & Toubro won 45.813 km Line-3’s contract with a scope between Madhavaram Milk Colony and Sholinganallur Station. This section is mostly underground and under construction by Tata Projects & Larsen Toubro.

KEC – VNC JV won 47 km Line-5’s contract with a scope between Madhavaram Milk Colony – CMBT Station and inside Madhavaram Depot.

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) invited tenders for both in January 2022. Technical bids were opened in June to reveal 3 bidders for Line-3 and 4 bidders for Line-5.

Financial bid values remain unknown, so I can’t provide an assessment on the likelihood of contracts getting awarded.

If awarded, this will be L&T’s second track-work contract in Phase 2. Back in July, they were awarded a Rs. 339.63 crore contract to supply tracks for the Line-3’s elevated Sholinganallur – SIPCOT section and Line-5’s elevated CMBT and ELCOT section.
