L&T Launches Chennai Metro Line-5 ECV-02’s 1st Pier Cap

Larsen & Toubro on Wednesday morning erected their first 9.5m wide pier cap for Package C5-ECV-02 of Chennai Metro Phase 2’s 47 km Line-5 which will connect Madhavaram – Sholinganallur through 48 stations.

12.431 km long Package C5-ECV-02 will connect CMBT – Puzhuthivakkam via 12 elevated stations. This feat was recorded at pier P-321 located on Mount Poonamallee Road in Nandabakkam’s IDPL neighborhood.

L&T was awarded C5-ECV-02’s Rs. 1656 crore contract in November 2021 with a 36 month deadline.

This section’s viaduct and 12 sections are located right in the middle of Line-5. It consists of 2 disjointed sections on either side of the double-decker Package C4-ECV-01 (Power House – Porur) which was awarded to Larsen & Toubro in May 2021.

The two sections and other infrastructure within include:

  1. CMBT to Alwartiru Nagar (approx. 3.2 km) with 3 stations at Grain Market, Sai Nagar Bus Stop and Elango Nagar Bus Stop
  2. Porur Junction to Puzhuthivakkam (approx. 9 km) with 9 stations at Mugalivakkam, DLF IT SEZ, Sathya Nagar, CTC, Butt Road, Alandur, Adambakkam, Vanuvampet and Puzhuthivakkam
  3. Integrated grade separator (flyover) from Mugalivakkam to MIOT Hospital (approx. 2.5 km double decker viaduct for vehicles and metro trains, like the local one at Vadapalani or the one that opened in Nagpur late last year).
  4. Underpass at Vanuvampet

This milestone was recorded in roughly 15 months from the award of contract, which is way beyond the average time taken by contractors.

Site conditions vary vastly across the country, but for comparison with other ongoing projects – SNC in Bengaluru took 12 months for the ORR Line’s 1st pier cap, Sam India – Gulermak JV in Delhi took 10 months for Magenta Line’s extension, while JMC Projects recently took just 6 months for Kanpur Metro’s 2nd elevated section.

Can you kindly confirm how CMRL is planning to build line above porur flyover. As there are two lines which will cross porur flyover.
