L&T – Sojitz JV Awarded Mumbai – Ahmedabad Bullet Train’s Electrification Contract EW-1

India’s National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL) on Monday awarded Larsen & Toubro – Sojitz Corporation Consortium with the 25kV power supply electrification contract EW-1 of the 508 km Mumbai – Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train) project.

The contract’s final value wasn’t disclosed in NHSRCL’s press release, but I believe we should get a range of its value when L&T announces it to the Bombay Stock Exchange, likely later today (Tuesday).

Update: L&T announced it as a ‘Mega’ contract which has a value ranging between Rs. 10,000 to 15,000 crore.

The scope of this package includes commissioning a 2 x 25 kV overhead electrification (OHE) system suitable to enable the line’s Shinkansen trains to operate up to speeds of up to 320 km/hour.

This includes designing and commissioning traction substations, switching substations, distribution systems, associated buildings, training institute equipment for the entire MAHSR corridor and 3 depots located in Thane (Package D1), Surat (Part of Package C4) and Sabarmati (Package D2).

NHSRCL had invited bids for the line’s Electrification Package EW-1 in December 2022 and opened technical bids in July 2023.

This is L&T – Sojitz JV’s second win in MAHSR project after Sabarmati Depot (Package D2) which was awarded in December 2022. On the individual level, this is L&T’s 8th major win after civil packages C3, C4, C5, C6, D2 & system packages P4 (X & Y) and T3.
