TBM S64 Makes Final Breakthrough for Mumbai Metro Line-3’s UGC-05
Moments ago, Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) S64 operated by the J Kumar Infraprojects – China Railway Tunnel Group JV made a breakthrough at Dharavi Station’s northern-end on Mumbai Metro’s 33.5 km Aqua Line (Line-3).
This was S64’s second (and final) breakthrough, J Kumar – CRTG’s sixth (and final) breakthough for the 4.94 km Dharavi – CSIA T1 package UGC-05, and overall Mumbai Metro Line-3’s 30th TBM breakthrough.
Like its sister machine S63 (Godavari-3), this Ø6.61m Terratec Earth Pressure Balance TBM, nicknamed Godavari-4, previously saw action in Delhi to build its new Pink Line (package CC-20 / CC-24) for the 162 km Phase 3 project, and was then extensively refurbished and retooled for this section’s highly weathered ground conditions at a yard located in Mundka, Delhi.
The TBM was first commissioned from BKC Station’s northern-end in October 2018 to build the 886 meter up-line tunnel to Vidyanagari Station. After its breakthrough in April 2019, it was then recommissioned to build the 1462 meter up-line tunnel towards Dharavi Station during which it passed right beneath the Mithi River at a depth of 8-12m below the riverbed.
Last week, a TOI article quoting MMRCL suggested 45,560/54,523m (83%) of tunneling works had been completed.
With this development, tunneling works on 3 out of 7 packages have been wrapped up –
- UGC-02: CST – Mumbai Central (4.049 km) – Final breakthrough recorded by TBM T59 (Vaitarna-2) in April 2020
- UGC-05: Dharavi – CSIA T1 (4.94 km) – Final breakthrough recorded by TBM S64 (Godavari-4) today
- UGC-07: CSIA T2 – Sariput Ramp (4.157 km) – Final breakthrough recorded by TBM D213 (Wainganga-2) in December 2019.
With 30 breakthroughs completed, there are now just 11 more breakthroughs pending (this table is best viewed on a desktop device)

Has the depot works started as yet?
Nope, on-hold. Work is going on at the nearby Sariput Ramp though.
Thanks this wasting of precious time leads to overruns and cutting corners in the end.
Congrats JK team
Hi TMRG,
Will it be practically possible to finish the tunneling works (i.e. achieve the remaining 11 breakthroughs) by the end of this year/31st Dec?
Hi, expecting it to drag on until late 2021. I wouldn’t be surprised if it spills into 2022.
UGC-04 is the ‘long pole’ of the project – only 2/6 breakthroughs have been completed so far.
yes Sir u are correct UG_4 is the long pole but within December2020 they will complete all Tunneling works. Only 2 breakthrough are remaining among 8.
Sorry, I was referring to UGC-03 under Dogus-Soma’s belt.
Thank you sir.
