Delhi Metro’s TBM Amrit Records Breakthrough at Maa Anandmayee Marg

Afcons Infrastructure today celebrated Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Amrit’s first breakthrough at Maa Anandmayee Marg Station of Delhi Metro’s 23.622 km Golden Line which will connect Aerocity – Tughalakabad via 16 stations.

TBM Amrit (372) is a 105m long refurbished Robbins Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine and in May 2023 became the first TBM to start tunneling works for the 85.86 km Delhi Metro Phase 4 project’s 6.981 km Package DC-07 connecting Sangam Vihar Station and Sarita Vihar Depot.

The machine was commissioned from Airforce Launch Shaft, located just east of Sangam Vihar Station, and travelled a distance of 2.65 km to arrive Maa Anandmayee Marg Station in 18 months achieving an average excavation rate of 148m per month.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) claims this to be the longest tunnel in the entire Phase 4 project, but that’s not entirely true. Back in September, Afcons Infra’s TBMs Bhoomi (S-710) and Shristi (S-1134) completed building 2996m & 2999m long tunnels from Derawal Nagar to Pulbangash Station. Tunnel rings will eventually be dismantled to build Ghanta Ghar Station, so yes when that happens the tunnels will have a roughly 250m gap in the middle.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had awarded Afcons with Package DC-07’s Rs. 1669.20 crore contract in January 2022 with a 42 month deadline.

Afcons’ 6.981 km Package DC-07 connects Sangam Vihar Station’s east-end and Sarita Vihar Depot via 3 stations at Maa Anandmayee Marg, Tughlakabad Railway Colony, and Tughlakabad where it will form an interchange with the Violet Line’s station built in Phase 2.

TBM Amrit built 1894 rings along the way with an inner diameter of 5.8 meters. Per DMRC’s press release, “the tunnelling work posed significant technical challenges, including the relocation of a sewer line, navigation through hard rock strata etc.

DMRC expects the parallel tunnel to be completed in January 2025.

With this development, a total of 5 tunnel breakthroughs have been recorded so far for the Golden Line. From east to west: 1 by Afcons for Package DC-07, 4 by L&T for Package DC-09, and 0 by J Kumar on Package DC-08.

Back in November, Afcons commissioned their third TBM – named TBM Disha – for Package DC-07. That machine will build a 959m tunnel from Tughlakabad Metro Station to Tughlakabad Railway Colony Station.

      Neb Sarai is in South Delhi and will be connected to Golden Line

      Afcons has 4 machines on Magenta Line’s DC-05. Two of them (Robbins 367 & 373) are currently tunneling northward from Nabi Karim to Pulbangash. The other two (Herrenknecht S-710 & S-1134) just recorded a double breakthrough at Pulbangash from from Derawal Nagar Station.

    YFC should leave the work. Absolutely nil progress this year . they just waste time of the project. Quality issues is another thing.
