5 Bidders for Chennai Metro Poonamallee Depot’s Construction

5 construction firms have submitted bids to construct Chennai Metro Line-4’s Poonamallee Depot after Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. opened technical bids today for Package DPT-01.

This depot of the 118.9 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project will serve trains on the new 26.09 km Line-4 which will connect Light House – Poonamallee Bypass through 30 stations. It will be used to stable and maintain the line’s 26 3-coach train-sets for which bids were invited in December.

CMRL invited tenders for the depot’s construction in January with a 3 year completion deadline. Design details such as the number of stabling, workshop, inspection lines wasn’t mentioned in the basic tender notice and still remains unknown at this time.

Lead Bidders (some might be in JV with others):

  • Altis Holding Corporation
  • BGR Energy Systems
  • Hindustan Construction Co. (HCC)
  • Power Mech Projects
  • URC Constructions (URCC)

Brief Scope: Construction of Depot at Poonamallee including Structural Works, Architectural Finishes, Plumbing Works, Signages , Utility shifting & Boundary wall and all Associated works

Package: DPT-01

The bids have now been sent for technical bid evaluation which can take a couple months to complete. When that is done, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to reveal who’s the lowest bidder and most likely contractor for its construction.

Phase 2 project’s larger depot at Madhavaram in north Chennai will be used for lines 3 & 5, and CMRL received 6 bids for its construction yesterday. Poonamallee will be the first to become operational, which I imagine would happen around 2025.

With today’s development, technical bids for just 4 more civil packages are now pending opening: 1 each on Line-3 (C3-ECV-01) & Line-5 (UG-06) and 2 on Line-4 (C4-UG-01 & C4-UG-02). A list of all Phase 2 civil packages and their status can be viewed here.

Naah. Haven’t seen any substantial visible progress at Hebbagodi. Things are just so slow. At Kadugodi, they’re constructing structures & other supporting infra where land is available.
