Delhi Metro Phase 4’s 1st Alstom Train Arrives at Mukundpur
Alstom Transport on Friday delivered their first of 52 Metropolis train-sets for the 85.86 km Delhi Metro Phase 4 project at the Pink Line’s Mukundpur Depot.
This 6-coach train had rolled out of Alstom’s Sri City, Andhra Pradesh facility in September at an event organized with officials from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
The train is part of Delhi Metro Phase 4’s Package RS-17 which was awarded to Alstom Transport in October 2022 with a contract value of Rs. 2631.36 crore and 4.5 year delivery period.
52 x 6-coach trains from Package RS-17 will be deployed across 3 of Phase 4’s 5 metro lines: Magenta Line, Pink Line & Golden Line. Instead of a follow-up order, I reckon DMRC will most likely invite bids for procuring trains for Lajpat Nagar – Saket & Inderlok – Indraprastha lines.
Delhi’s new trains are designed for a maximum speed of up to 95 kmph and operational speed of up to 85 kmph, with GOA 4 (grade of automation) features for driverless or Unattended Train Operations (UTO).
Delhi Metro’s RS-17 rolling stock contract is being financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through a Rs. 8,390 crore loan and consists of two parts:
- 90 coaches (15 x 6 coaches) for Line-7 / Pink Line’s 12.558 km extension (Mukundpur – Maujpur), and 144 coaches (24 x 6 coaches) for Line-8 / Magenta Line’s 28.92 km extension (Janakpuri West – RK Ashram)
- 78 coaches (13 x 6 coaches) for new 23.622 km Line-10 / Golden Line (Aerocity – Tughlakabad) – contract includes maintenance for a period of 15 years.
The lightweight train-sets will be operated in formations of DMC + TC + MC + MC + TC + DMC where DMC = Driving Motor Car, MC = Motor Car and TC = Trailer Car.
With Alstom’s CBTC signaling and train-control solution from Package DS-06, the trains will be capable of GoA4 grade of automation for Unattended Train Operations (UTO). The new trains will be stabled at the following maintenance depots:
- Line-7 (Pink Line): Mukundpur (existing) and Vinod Nagar (existing)
- Line-8 (Magenta Line): Kalindi Kunj (existing) and Mukundpur (future)
- Line-10 (Golden Line): Sarita Vihar (future)
As shared in the past, the trains’ design is essentially the same as Mumbai Metro Aqua Line’s Alstom trains which are currently also being manufactured at Sri City. At 3.2m, they’re a little wider than Chennai Metro Line-4’s new ARE03A trains – the first of which also rolled out in September.
After this order is fulfilled, which I imagine would be around 2027, Delhi Metro network’s fleet will reach 2606 coaches. A full recap of Delhi’s 17 rolling stock contracts can viewed here.

13 trains for new Golden Line..I e approximately 23 km
And 15 train for 12 km pink line extension. 👽
Also, I heard DMRC has also submitted DPR for grey line extension till Delhi Haryana Border.
Just typical Standards of “Bare minimum” they do this as Golden line will be completely new corridor while Pink line is already well established, same thing you will find in facilities(escalators, lifts, no of coaches etc) and aesthetics too. Authorities here opt bare minimum standards when asked they call it phasic developments. In other systems in big cities like Tokyo metro they run 10 coaches trainsets with 2-4min frequency.
Not essentially but these are Exactly same as Mumbai metro line 3 coaches…Alstom is delivering almost same coaches in all the Indian Metro projects. The last Creative work was Pune Metro line 3 rolling stock, which is still in production stage.
Also, I heard Grey line is going to be Extended till Rawta More at Delhi haryana border!!! And DMRC submitted DPR.. When did this happened? I don’t think this was among any plans of DMRC in phase 4…
The Pune Metro line 3 rolling stock you mentioned isn’t new. The stock is same as Lucknow Metro with a few upgrades to Headlight unit and Doors. If u put front image side by side you can easily spot similarities in structure
The creativity I was talking about was the doors and the front look only. But yes, That too is a derivative of this rolling stock.
Standardization like this is good as it helps reduce costs in the long run. It’s what China does with most of their metro lines
Any updates regarding yellow line train sets for Bangalore metro?
Alstom rolling stock in all cities looks same. Plus it’s not very appealing either. At least in designing department, CRRC does better job.
