Delhi Metro Phase 4’s 1st Alstom RS17 Train Rolls Out in Sri City

Yesterday it was Chennai Metro’s turn, and today it is Delhi Metro’s!

Alstom Transport this morning rolled-out their first of 52 Metropolis trains for Delhi Metro Phase 4 project at their Sri City, Andhra Pradesh facility in the presence of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials.

Six-coach trains from 85.86 km Delhi Metro Phase 4’s Package RS-17 will be deployed across 3 metro lines (Magenta Line, Pink Line & Golden Line) via a Rs. 2631.36 crore (312 million Euro) contract awarded in October 2022 with a 4.5 year delivery completion deadline.

These new trains are designed for a maximum speed of up to 95 kmph and operational speed of up to 85 kmph, with GOA 4 (grade of automation) features for driverless or Unattended Train Operations (UTO).

Delhi Metro RS-17 rolling stock contract is being financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through a Rs. 8,390 crore loan and consists of two parts:

  • 90 coaches (15 x 6 coaches) for Line-7 / Pink Line’s 12.558 km extension (Mukundpur – Maujpur), and 144 coaches (24 x 6 coaches) for Line-8 / Magenta Line’s 28.92 km extension (Janakpuri West – RK Ashram)
  • 78 coaches (13 x 6 coaches) for new 23.622 km Line-10 / Golden Line (Aerocity – Tughlakabad) – contract includes maintenance for a period of 15 years.

Alstom had formally started manufacturing activity in February 2024 during which they revealed the new trains’ design:

Delhi’s new lightweight train-sets will be operated in formations of DMC + TC + MC + MC + TC + DMC where DMC = Driving Motor Car, MC = Motor Car and TC = Trailer Car.

With Alstom’s CBTC signaling and train-control solution from Package DS-06, the trains will be capable of GoA4 grade of automation for Unattended Train Operations (UTO). The new trains will be stabled at the following maintenance depots:

  • Line-7 (Pink Line): Mukundpur (existing) and Vinod Nagar (existing)
  • Line-8 (Magenta Line): Kalindi Kunj (existing) and Mukundpur (future)
  • Line-10 (Silver Line): Sarita Vihar (future)

As shared in the past, the trains’ design is essentially the same as Mumbai Metro Aqua Line’s Alstom trains which are currently also being manufactured at Sri City. At 3.2m, they’re a little wider than Chennai Metro Line-4’s new ARE03A trains – the first of which just rolled out yesterday.

After this order is fulfilled, which I imagine would be around 2027, Delhi Metro network’s fleet will reach 2606 coaches. A full recap of Delhi’s 17 rolling stock contracts can viewed here.

    As expected, Rolling stock delivery is punctual as per time frame given. While DMRC has constructed damn ‘1’ station only in past 5 years! And they are happy as if some milestone has been achieved.
    I can say these trains coming one after other will be parked somewhere( similar to Mumbai Metro) while DMRC would be Citing stupid land acquisition and tree cutting excuses as the cause of delay even after deadline.

    Aap in Traino ka kiya karoge, kiya aap inhe aagle 5 saal ke liye khada karne ke liye la rahe h, abhi tak sirf ek station hi ready ho paya h, phase 4 me, baki ka kaam bhot bacha h, sabse jada bora hal new golden ka h, oska kaam tu itna slow chal raha h, ki mano angle 10 me bhi pora na ho paye.

    Golden line work is slowest of the lot. Super slow work, DMRC should learn from NCRTC which is also working in the same city Delhi. Within Delhi NCRTC work is fastest.NCRTC also faced same issues however, contractor of NCRTC is working day and night on sections where they are allowed to work.
    DMRC just allowed YFC to stay idle for long. Even now speed of work is slower than snail.
    DMRC has become like MCD & PWD.
    DMRC should be handed over to NCRTC.

    Golden line work too slow, this is not expected from DMRC, what are you doing this new train, I think phase 4 not completed next 5 year because of work is very very slow shame on you DMRC.

    Kindly accelerate the work of Golden line as soon as possible for the public sake. People suffering a lot because of narrow roads due to the Metro Construction.

    Golden line work should be expedited. If they are targeting 2026 for opening this line then they have to speed up the work now.

    Why do Metropolis rolling stocks keep getting uglier in India? There’s huge difference between CMRL phase 1 and DMRC phase 4 rolling stocks and the design has been degrading since Alstom’s earliest desi projects. Alstom’s export to Sydney was the only beautiful rake to be made in India during the degrading period
